Project Details
Interaction of acoustics and combustion in rocket engine combustion chambers (C07)
Subject Area
Hydraulic and Turbo Engines and Piston Engines
Term
from 2013 to 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 26293245
High frequency combustion instabilities are generated by interaction of combustion processes with the combustion chamber acoustics and present a severe risk for liquid propellant rocket engines. Due to the complexity of the involved processes, the interaction mechanisms are still not fully understood. Self-excited combustion instabilities are studied in a highly representative hydrogen/oxygen research combustor. Within the scope of the second funding period the basic mechanism leading to the observed instability was identi-fied. In the third funding period the coupling of the oscillating flame with the chamber acoustics will be ana-lysed in more detail by the use of 2D flame visualization.
