One of the main tasks of German Philology is to replace methodologically obsolete and frequently unreliable 19th century editions of medieval German texts. Since the new editions of the historical Dietrich epics, Laurin and Rosengarten have been published and/or prepared in Bremen during the last years, a new edition of Virginal is now a central desideratum in the research on medieval German heroic epic. The project aim is a new text edition, close to the manuscript tradition, of the three versions of Virginal, which can serve as a historically verified text basis for research on textual and transmission history as well as for literary history and interpretation; the short fragment Goldemar, closely related to Virginal in terms of genre and topics, is to be edited, too.
