Bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation: Physical processes at interfaces (B02)

Subject Area Statistical Physics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Complex Systems, Soft and Fluid Matter, Biological Physics
Term since 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 200049484

The interaction of microorganisms with biologic or artificial surfaces is often a key factor in disease pathogenesis. The goal of this project is to use biophysical methods in combination with microbial genetic engineering for the physical modeling of microbial cell processes resulting in substrate colonization. Based on our recent findings made within the previous funding periods, we will next determine the initial adhesion of viable bacteria and yeast cells to complex biological surfaces and in the context of bodily fluids. Insights in these phenomena may help to explore new avenues in prevention and treatment of major microbial infec-tions.
