Core facility for genetically engineered pig lines (Z03)

Subject Area Biology
Term from 2012 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 213602983

The goal of this project is to provide genetically multi-modified (GM) donor pigs (originally generated and characterised in projects B1&2 and B3) for preclinical experiments: GM donors for basic studies as well as islet, heart valve, and heart transplantation studies have been delivered to Project Groups A and C. The Centre for Innovative Medical Models (CiMM) at LMU Munich has been completed with high hygienic standards (e.g. PCMV free, HEV free) and GM pig lines have been introduced via embryo transfer. PERV-C free animals have been identified and a mini-herd is being maintained. Moreover, Auckland Islet pigs have been successfully imported into the CiMM facility and will be provided as islet donors. A uniform high hygiene standard of donor pigs for preclinical transplantation studies and a pipeline, which facilitates the distribution of designated pathogen-free tissues and organs for clinical trials, will be established.
