We will determine the molecular identity, function, and epilepsy-related plasticity of voltage- and calcium-dependent potassium channels of dentate gyrus granule cells. To this end we will use electrophysiological and molecular biology techniques. Hippocampal tissue of humans obtained during epilepsy surgery and epilepsy animal models will be employed. Using conductance-based computer simulations, we will precisely dissect the functional impact of identified potassium channels under physiological and pathophysiological conditions.
