TP A6 aims at the development of novel hierarchical nanocomposite materials with an improved combination of mechanical properties compared to conventional composite materials. This is to be achieved by combining an inorganic and an organic component, the former providing strength, stiffness and hardness and the latter forming a thin soft interface to increase fracture toughness and damage tolerance. The two components must be arranged multi-scale, in a so-called brick and mortar morphology - ideal for crack deflection - with the first hierarchical level typically being a supercrystal of functionalized nanoparticles.
