Dye Conjugates with a Low Band Gap

The general goal of this research project is the generation of new optical properties in macromolecules by covalent connection of chromophore building blocks. The properties of these macromolecules are not the sum of those of the monomers but will be generated by the interaction of individual monomers. These properties can be static such as a low band gap in conjugated polymers but can also be dynamic such as a high exciton diffusion rate.In this funding application we will focus on new aspects based on the forgoing funding period. We intend to generate specifically stretched zig-zag or helix structures by synthetic modification of squaraine homopolymers and to synthesise star-like oligomers based on these squaraine dyes. In order to produce copolymers we will copolymerise squaraines with other fluorescent dyes such as BODIPYs. All these macromolecular structures shall predominantly be investigated in solution by ultrafast spectroscopy in order to understand the interactions between the monomeric building blocks in detail and to make them available for integration in optoelectronic devices.
