This project uses the linkage between the NEPS Adult Cohort and administrative data from the Integrated Employment Biographies (IEB) provided by the IAB Nürnberg. These linked data have become available in March 2014. They will allow us to combine the detailed educational information in the NEPS with precise information on labor market biographies in the IAB data. In the first part of the project, we will build on our preliminary work in the first funding period. We analyze the causal effects of educational pathways and early labor market experiences on long-term labor market outcomes. The regional supply of schools and regional labor market conditions will be used as instrumental variables for secondary and postsecondary education and early labor market experiences. We compare different cohorts of young individuals entering the labor market. The second part of the project analyzes how educational pathways respond to regional labor market characteristics such as returns to education and industry structures. This research question is motivated by the fact that educational attainment in Germany differs considerably across regions.
