The goal of the project is the installation of the P2 experiment at the new MESA accelerator for a measurement of the weak mixing angle at small energies in elastic electron scattering with an accuracy of Delta sin2θw=0.00037 (relative uncertainty 0.16%), comparable with the most precise measurements at LEP and with future measurements at the LHC. This is achieved by the determination of the weak charge of the proton by a measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in elastic scattering of polarised electrons off unpolarised protons.
