Development and optimisation of different overall concepts for the thermal decomposition of methane using a porous Fluid-Wall-Flow Reactor and a Molten-Metal Capillary Reactor

Subject Area Technical Chemistry
Term from 2012 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 214829061

Non-catalytic thermal pyrolysis of methane is a promising concept for hydrogen production with low to zero carbon dioxide emissions. It is, however, an extremely challenging reaction system and, while there are several promising reaction engineering solutions available, considerable development work is still required. First of all the report describes the completed part of pyrolysis of methane in the fluid wall flow reactor, the development and the huge increase of knowledge in this topic of high-temperature reaction engineering in our research group. Furthermore results of the molten metal capillary reactor are shown as well as the required enhancements of the concept due to results and experiences during the course of the project.
