Project Details
Alfvénic impact on heliospheric plasma turbulence (A03)
Subject Area
Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term
from 2012 to 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 187005812
The properties and evolution of the plasma turbulence in the inner heliosphere will systematically be studied with the goal of constructing five-dimensional turbulence spectra as a function of frequencies, the wave vector components, and the distance from the Sun. The primary method is a combination of numerical simulations using magnetohydrodynamic, hybrid, and fully kinetic codes, covering the fluid scale (1000-10,000 km), the ion-kinetic scale (100-1000 km), and the electron-kinetic scale (10-100 km), respectively. In situ spacecraft observations of the solar wind turbulence will be used to verify the models at 0.3 AU (orbit of Mercury), 0.7 AU (Venus) and 1 AU (Earth).
