The aim of this project is the analysis of the performance limits of non-coherent com-munication in two types of wireless networks of practical relevance and the investiga-tion of appropriate transmission schemes for these networks. With non-coherent com-munication we mean that neither transmit nor receive channel knowledge is available at the network nodes. The networks of interest include networks with relays and interfer-ence networks. Preliminary results of our group members show that, under certain as-sumptions, non-coherent communication attains a significant fraction of the perform-ance of coherent communication in the same setup in terms of the achievable sum rate. Therefore, the investigation of appropriate schemes for non-coherent communication is of practical relevance. Additionally, in certain cases, the analysis with the assumption of no channel knowledge gives new insight for the case with channel knowledge. Hence, the work on non-coherent communication can also lead to a better understand-ing of the performance limits of wireless networks in general.
