The requested instrumentation will be pivotal for imaging experiments employing the joint expertise of members of the group in optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. We aim at the development of a combination of imaging techniques for metals, small active substances, oligomers and biopolymers in biological specimens. Analysis of lateral distributions using LA-ICP-MS and Imaging MALDI MS will be used to study the impact of drug on tissue from several sources. Cooperation with medical schools in Berlin, Hamburg, and Essen will provide the specimens and the questions asked concerning the fate of drugs, nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles and model compounds, of metals and the target biopolymers. This will be combined with optical microspectroscopic imaging, in particular fluorescence, Raman, and infrared microscopy to provide a true hyphenation of the methods. Methods for the analysis of the molecules will be applied and developed especially for the analysis of modified biopolymers using MALDI MS with high resolution in lateral and mass spectrometric terms.
