Subject Area

Term
from 2011 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 178035969
The investigation focuses on writing and characters employed in decoration of church buildings and liturgical space in Central and Western Europe. In the third funding-period, the sanctuary as the place of the missal sacrifice shall be taken into account. The leading question is: what contribution did the carved, chiselled or painted writings on, in and next to the altar make to the suggestion of sacrality and to the generation of 'presence'? The expected research results will be used to sharpen the definition of 'presence' as of one of the CRC's methodical key concepts.
