The combination of plasmonic control over electric field strengths and nonlinear high-intensity processes, such as high harmonic generation, provides new possibilities and synergistic effects between nano-optics and attosecond physics. The project is a theoretical investigation on new approaches to increase the efficiency and to reduce the required pump intensity of high-harmonic generation and stimulated Raman scattering. We will study novel periodic arrangements of metallic nanostructures that provide both plasmonic enhancement of the electric field and quasi-phase-matching. In particular for the case of high harmonic generation, quasi-phase matching by rough and corrugated metallic surfaces, periodic metallic structures, and nanoparticles with varying concentration in a gas-nanoparticle mixture will be studied. For the case of stimulated Raman scattering similar aims will be considered, for example using a modulated concentration of metal nanoparticles in a gas-nanoparticle mixture and using spatial gratings. Close cooperation on these subjects is planned with experimental groups at the Max Born Institute, Berlin and the University of Bath. The results of this project will contribute to the fields of attosecond science, time-resolved spectroscopy and other areas, and will stimulate their further progress.
