Pleiotropy or linkage - one genomic segment controls multiple drought-related traits in maize (B02)

Subject Area Plant Breeding and Plant Pathology
Term from 2011 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 170483403

We showed that a single genomic segment on chromosome 7 affects several drought-related traits in maize. In the next phase of the project, we will use near isogenic lines carrying overlapping segments of the target region to elucidate whether this trait co-localization is due to pleiotropic effects of the same gene(s) and/or tight linkage of causal genes. Combined genetic, physiological and bioinformatic analyses will unravel the mechanisms underlying trait expression and reveal causative genes. We will perform functional analyses of the selected genes using recombinant and transgenic lines in controlled environments in order to validate their role in the observed phenotypes, to test for pleiotropic effects and to study possible trade-offs in breeding-relevant traits.
