Water deficit is the major limitation of crop yield and impinges on yield stability. Ectopic expression of certain abscisic acid receptors in Arabidopsis thaliana can result in plants having reduced transpiration while photosynthesis rate and growth properties are unaffected. CO2 uptake into these lines is more water-efficient by a lowered intercellular CO2 level compared to wild type. How plants can sustain photosynthesis with lowered intercellular CO2 concentrations is an intriguing and unresolved question and might involve metabolic adjustments at multiple levels. In this project part, the physiological and genetic basis of this water use efficient trait will be studied.
