This research project contributes to a European writing center research. It generates expert knowledge about implementing writing centers in higher education. Based on expert interviews with experienced writing center directors in the USA, knowledge about successful writing center work will be generated. All experts have been working in the field of writing centers for many years and also contributed substantial to writing center research. Participant observations will supplement the expert interviews and help to understand the American university context and to reflect what is transferable across cultures. University writing centers support learning and teaching arrangements that should play a significant role in the restructuring of higher education across Europe (Bologna discourse): Writing centers provide individualised and flexible learning, they foster key competencies for critical thinking and lifelong learning and they prepare students for their future in a globalized and digitalized world. Nevertheless, establishing writing centers in Europe remains difficult. This might be caused by the lack of writing center research as a discipline in Europe. Therefore, this research project should make a contribution to writing center research from a European perspective.
