Spincaloric transport and thermal spin transfer torque in thin film nanostructures

The spin Seebeck effect has been observed in three distinctly different materials and so far no common theory exists to describe these observations. Here, we propose to investigate several aspects of the spin Seebeck effect in metals (Permalloy, FeCo alloys), insulators (EuO) and half metals (Fe3Si). We will perform all electrical measurements on extended films as well as on microstructured systems supported by investigations of the spin pumping effect and of spin wave propagation. Furthermore we will address thermally induced spin currents in lateral devices (domain wall motion by thermally induced spin currents) and thermally induced spin transfer torque in multilayers. The former will be investigated in a static Kerr microscope combined with femtosecond laser heating while the latter will be investigated in an all optical pump-probe experiment.
