Vertical relations shape market structures at the different layers of production and distribution. Marketpower and imperfect competition at the upstream and downstream layers are important determinantsof firm behavior along the vertical chain. In this project we propose to make conceptual contributions to the theory of vertically related markets. In our project, we take a broad view of such markets by including markets where intermediaries linkupstream sellers to downstream buyers. Using new and already existing frameworks, we will studyopen issues in industrial organization, and also in international trade and public economics. Theresults of the project will provide guidance to policymakers on antitrust, international trade, and taxissues.
