Resonant Coupling of a Nanomechanical Resonator and a NV-Center

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2011 to 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 195936002

The goal of the project is to establish a resonant interaction of the spin excitation of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond with the oscillatory motion of a nanomechanical resonator. Ideally, both degrees of freedom are cooled to their quantum mechanical ground state as explained below to allow for a coherent interaction between an atomic-like system and a macroscopic object. As the mechanical system can be comparatively simple coupled to electro-(magnetic) fields, it is envisioned to utilize the resonator as a transducer that serves to resonantly couple several NV-centers. Moreover it may allow for scaling the system to large numbers; an outstanding problem in quantum information processing.
