Seit dem Anbeginn der Psychophysik wird versucht, die menschliche Fähigkeit zur Reizdiskrimination zu quantifizieren und deren zugrundeliegenden Mechanismen zu verstehen. Eine besondere Herausforderung für die psychophysische Theoriebildung ist dabei allerdings der sogenannte Typ-B-Effekt, der in der klassischen 2AFC Aufgabe zutage tritt. Hier sollen die Versuchspersonen zwischen einem konstanten Standardreiz s und einem variablen Vergleichsreiz c unterscheiden. Dabei hängt die Diskriminationssensitivität von der zeitlichen Reihenfolge der beiden Reize ab: Versuchspersonen sind typischerweise für Reizpaare der Reihenfolge
