Project Details
Chemo-dynamical Mapping of the Milky Way’s Outskirts (A03)
Subject Area
Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term
from 2011 to 2022
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 138713538
We will exploit the now available astrometric, spectral, and/or time-domain data of Gaia DR2 and DR3 in conjunction with massive ground-based photometric and spectroscopic surveys in order to characterize the stellar halo’s profile and quantify the amount of substructure in different population tracers, characterize it in orbital space, infer its population and abundance properties, and constrain in-situ formation as well as the properties of the stream progenitors (such as glob-ular clusters, dwarf galaxies, disk warp). Furthermore, we will employ wide binaries as probes of the Galaxy’s (dark matter) halo properties.
