GRK 1759:  Knowledge in the Arts

Subject Area Art History, Music, Theatre and Media Studies
Term from 2012 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 188727628

Against the background of continuing discussions of the so-called 'knowledge society', the Post Graduate Programme is researching into a specifically artistic form of knowledge production and its framework conditions, effects and critical potentials. The leading hypothesis is that the arts represent a genuine field for the production, storage and mediation of knowledge, a field that is involved in a vital exchange with other spheres of knowledge within society. The programme's focus on the arts opens up an area of research representing a desideratum among traditional approaches in the sociology of knowledge, the history of knowledge and science, and the cultural sciences. Our work is motivated by the observation that knowledge concepts are of elementary importance in the motivation, self-understanding and practices of 20th- and 21st-century arts, and that the arts play a decisive role in the genesis and dissemination of technical, political, economic and natural scientific knowledge forms. In order to investigate these interdependencies, the work of the Post Graduate Programme integrates the disciplines of art theory and cultural science, theatre and media studies, philosophy, architecture and education. Situated at Berlin University of the Arts ¿¿ in other words, at an institution where the various arts are practised, taught and researched - the programme illuminates the negotiation processes through which artistic knowledge is articulated and legitimized. The programme's combination of subjects and direct exchange with artistic practice at the UdK Berlin facilitates an innovative comparative approach, both between the various arts and between art and science.
