Response of generic swirl flames to transverse acoustic forcing

Subject Area Fluid Mechanics
Term from 2010 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 175585448

This project deals with experimental investigations on the response of a swirl-stabilized premixed flame to transverse acoustic forcing conducted on a specialized transverse acoustic forcing test-rig. The motivation behind the proposed study is to probe into the complex physics governing flow-flame-acoustics interaction. In addition to providing insights into a fundamental physical interaction that exists in nature and which has attracted significant scientific interest in the past, the study will also provide information crucial to dealing with the issue of thermoacoustic instability in modern annular gas turbine engines. The proposed methodology involves studying the effect of various possible configurations of transverse acoustic forcing on the swirl flame operated at a range of control parameters, chosen critically to identify the importance of individual physical processes involved in the interaction. The investigations are based on experiments involving detailed flow and flame diagnostics. Briefly stated, quantification of flame response to transverse forcing and establishing physical mechanisms that govern flame response constitute the aims of the project.
