High power picosecond laser system
Final Report Abstract
The acquired high power picosecond laser system with harmonic and burst option modules has been a primary tool for a number of research and development projects. Its average use is estimated to approach 40 hours per week on an annual basis contributing to the following research programs: • DFG priority program SPP 1327 “Optisch erzeugte Sub-100nm Strukturen für biomedizinische und technische Applikationen”. The objective of the research is to develop a flexible laser based technology to produce structures below the classical optical diffraction limit - down to sub 100 nm with possible applications being biological cell surgery, high resolution hologram fabrication. • Two research projects within the BMBF sponsored cluster “Medical Valley” in cooperation with an industrial partner. The projects focused on development of novel fabrication technique for intraocular lenses based on ultrafast laser machining of biocompatible polymers. The developed method of ultrafast laser lens cutting has been adopted by an industrial partner to be used as a part of the lens production process. • Industry sponsored investigations on the subject of material structuring with a high average power picosecond laser with the targeted objectives to increase material ablation rates (productivity) and to incorporate computer numerical control (CNC) into the machining process. • Ultrafast laser processing of glass materials primarily in-depth investigation of nonlinear laser welding of glass. • The laser is expected to be extensively used in the future for the above mentioned programs as well as for the DFG sponsored project “Trockenumformung mit lokal angepassten tribologischen Bedingungen ” within SPP 1676 starting in 2014.
