Nonthermal flaring of cosmic objects: Modelling photon and particle radiation

One of the most fascinating astrophysical phenomena to study are powerful flares of photon and particle radiation from cosmic events. These are often triggered by the sudden release of a large quantity of energy during a catastrophic event. Particular spectacular is the release of enormous amounts of energy on second-to-minutes timescales in the cosmologically distant sources of gamma ray bursts and active galactic nuclei associated with relativistic outflows.It is proposed to investigate two major, closely interlinked research topics:(A) Modelling proton and electron intensities and anisotropies from large solar flare events,(B) Synchrotron-Self Compton (SSC) flaring of active galactic nuclei.In both subprojects it is necessary to solve time-dependent transport equations of energetic hadrons and electrons which although in different cosmic environments have the same mathematical structure. The radiation modelling in SSC emission models additionally requires the inclusion of propagation and retardation effects of the generated nonthermal photons.
