The central budget will be used to intensify the contacts between the involved scientists by e.g. supporting the organization of the regular scientific meetings and workshops, as well as mutual visits of the research unit partners (section 6.2). In order to strengthen the expertise of the research unit and to increase its international visibility, several research stays of visiting scientists (section 2.3) will be financed from the central budget. The costs necessary for the publication of results in international journals will also be covered from the central budget. In addition, funds for consumables and a part-time secretary position will be necessary to coordinate the activities within the research unit, e.g. reports, meetings, research stays of the visiting scientists, updating the web page, etc. The joint effort regarding molecular film preparation within the consortium using spin coating and SAMs will require fast feed-back knowledge about the sample morphology as well as about the molecule/substrate interface structure. This information can be provided by scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations even before optical or electron spectroscopic methods are applied. These investigations will be performed using the facilities available in SP6 (TU Chemnitz). Taking into account, however, the significant time consumption needed for sample preparation and measurements, these tasks cannot be attributed to the duties of the SP6 staff. On the other hand, these investigations have a service character and can thus not contribute significantly to the scientific qualification of the Chemnitz Ph.D. student of SP6. The work can, however, be performed by a well qualified and skilled BSc. or MSc. student (studentische Hilfskraft, SHK) as training for a BSc. or MSc. thesis in the field of electron microscopy.
