Recently, we characterized the progeny of individual neural stem cells (NSCs) of the mouse adult subependymal zone (SEZ) in vivo, using clonal analysis. This analysis revealed a markedly fast lineage expansion, limited NSC self-renewal and their consequential exhaustion during a few weeks. In the next funding period, we will use established clonal methods to assess changes in the neuronal output of individual stem cells after we trigger a widespread depletion of mature dopaminergic neurons in the olfactory bulb or an enriched olfactory environment.
