Synthesis and Bond-Dynamics of Pseudo-BlockCopolymers
Final Report Abstract
Within this project, we demonstrate that the synthesis of a library of supramolecular polymer architectures and the interplay of phase segregation and H-bonding clusters of a library of polymers in both, solution and the solid state, results in a large variety of functional structures, putting the picture of always selectively interacting H-bonds in the sense of “key/lock”-bonds into a broader context. Whereas in solution often the specific H-bonding association is dominating over segregation-effects thus generating the expected key/lock-interaction, especially in solid polymers the opposite effects are observed, leading to non-specific interaction between the hydrogen-bonds, and in consequence to their clustering and aggregation. These effects allow the design of micro-phase segregated self-healing materials, multicompartimentized micelles, and micellar clusters with dynamic properties. Especially the design of materials with self-healing properties can be accomplished, where stress and mechanical deformation is taken up by dynamic clusters made from hydrogen bonds, directly responding by clusterreorganization and material-recovery via autonomous healing.
