Structures of quantum field theory and string theory present at the same time a challenge and an important source of inspiration for mathematics. The advent of string theory has brought a new quality to the interaction between mathematicians and physicists: ideas from string theory link areas of mathematics that were previously considered largely unrelated. On the other hand, at present only few mathematicians have sufficient background in physics to identify the mathematical content of physical concepts and questions. The proposed Research Training Group continues to address this issue, by providing its doctoral students with literacy in QFT and string theory, along with a traditional education as a researcher in a related field of mathematics or mathematical physics. The program builds on an established collaboration of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Hamburg with the II. Institute of Theoretical Physics and the DESY Theory Group.
