Development of an e-infrastructure for the animal movement ecology community
Final Report Abstract
The MoveVRE project builds on the pre-existing Movebank project (movebank.org) to create an e-infrastructure to support collaborative virtual research within the movement ecology community. First, we have developed the Movebank Data Repository at datarepository.movebank.org, which allows Movebank users to publish datasets to support persistent availability and future re-use of research data. Second, we have developed tools for online collaboration and have migrated Movebank user content to the current website. Third, we have developed a software program, the Animal Ecology Explorer (A2E), that provides novel ways for Movebank users to visualize animal movement data, explore relationships between movement data and other dataset attributes, and develop hypotheses about movement ecology. The tools created as part of MoveVRE are currently in use, and future maintenance and development are planned. Project staff presented our work throughout Germany and around the world at meetings about research data, virtual research environments, informatics, and movement ecology.
