The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich holds a collection of c. 650 Greek manuscripts which have only been described up to Cod.graec. 574 in a five-volume catalogue compiled by Ignaz Hardt in the years 1806 to 1812. The descriptions published in the early nineteenth century have been completely superseded and do not reflect the current state of scholarship nor do they fulfil the requirements of modern research in Greek literature with regard to information concerning the materiality of the manuscripts and the texts they transmit. As the holdings of Greek manuscripts in libraries world-wide are of a manageable scope, and as research in the fields of Greek paleography, codicology and filigranology has from the very beginnings been conducted on an international level, a comprehensive new catalogue of the Munich manuscripts has frequently been stipulated by scholars from all over the world. In consequence, the cataloguing enterprise was begun in 1992 and has since then been carried out continuously. Substantial investments were made by the Free State of Bavaria, which established the permanent post of one cataloguer, while the funding for second post was matched by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. In the course of the project, which will provide the basis for a contextualization of the Munich holdings in the total surviving heritage of Greek manuscripts world-wide, a standard for cataloguing Greek manuscripts was defined which has been universally accepted and continues to be valid up to the present day.
