Goal of the research project is the investigation of new heterotic string compactifications and their development and application to concrete problems of particle physics and cosmology. The mathematical methods comprise generalised geometries with fluxes, Calabi-Yau spaces and vector bundles, and furthermore dualities with other string compactifications, like F-theory and M-theory. In this connection we plan to study the effective action of different compactifcations of the heterotic string, in particular the effective superpotential. Various physical problems shall be investigated from the point of view of string theory: problems of particle physics: stringy Extension of the Standard Model, computation of concrete interactions; investigation of cosmological issues.
