The project deals with the quantum scattering of fast light atoms from surfaces in the regime of axial surface scattering. This phenomenon has proven in recent years to have the potential as powerful analytical tool in surface science with a number of very attractive features as extreme sensitivity to the topmost surface layer, no charging effects for insulator targets, or negligible radiation damage of the surface structure. In this proposal important features should be cleared up in detail and a protype of a compact instrument is intended to be tested with the aim of making this new technique available for a broader community of users in surface science.
