The project ¿Money and Monetary Policies of the Shogunate and Domains in late Tokugawa Japan: Discourses and Practices¿ investigates the history of money and finance in Japan and deploys an analysis of the various levels of political, ideological, monetary, and fiscal issues in the negotiations between political centres. Through the investigation of three case studies one important aim of the analysis is to explain a series of policies that were implemented by different actors in the attempt to gain greater control over foreign and domestic commerce. A discussion of the responsible politicians and advisors, the selection and ratification of the reforms and, most importantly, their result will offer new insights into the local and national economy of the time, which will contribute to a review of the relationship between money economy and socio-economic changes in the Tokugawa period.
