15 long sediment cores from Eifel dry maar lakes have been drilled between 2001 and 2004 by the ELSA project. Colour logging provides the basis for an ice-core-tuned stratigraphy, and 14C dates give absolute dates for interstadials. All 15 cores show repeatedly the same lithological features which will be synthesized into a general succession of lithological units (Normalprofil). Combination of lithology and stratigraphy for all 15 cores will give a complete record of all major climatic, environmental and volcanic events in the Eifel during the last glaciation. Geochemical, sedimentological and mineralogical analysis will be used to understand the environmental and climate causes for the event layers. Time series analysis on the succession of event layers and on the logging data will be use to detect those periodicities and related processes that controlled sedimentation patterns in the Eifel region during MIS2-5.
