The D1 Cologne-Aachen research program investigates the western central European habitat of early modern humans since their initial dispersal into Europe around 40,000 ka. Two time slices (MIS 3 and post-LGM) guide this joint geo-archaeological project in order to elucidate two major events: The advent of Homo sapiens in and the post-LGM resettlement of Central Europe. Previous geo-archaeological work focused on multiple sites in Germany. The project aims to model palaeolandscape evolution and its impact on past human populations and cultures. It will focus on diachronic demographic changes in the Rhine-Meuse area and the population/ culture turnover that lead to the replacement of Neanderthals.
