Polyfluorinated anionic boron clusters with one or more functional groups exhibit an unusual reactivity compared to the analogous non-fluorinated clusters and derivatives with the other halogen substituents. We have demonstrated that this unusual reactivity can be used for the preparation of highly fluorinated boron clusters, which are not accessible by other synthetic methods. The aim of this project is the further development of syntheses to result in highly fluorinated boron clusters with functional groups, the investigation of the properties of the novel compounds, and the comparison of the reactivity of the fluorinated clusters to those of the halogenated clusters with the heavier halogens. The focus is on carba-closo-dodecaboron and closo-undecaboron clusters and amino as well as cyano substituents as functional groups. A further aim of this project is to make polyfluorinated closo-borate anions with functional groups available as synthetic building blocks.
