The projects aims to study the drainage flows and (sub)canopy advection effects by taking advantage of the measurements made during EGER IOP1&2 and the existing infrastructure at the Weidenbrunnen/clear cut site. Our ambition is to use the observed turbulent integral scales, fluxes as well as horizontal gradients of the important scalars (CO2, H2O, NO, NO2, O3) that are key to modeling canopy-atmosphere exchange. In order to better interpret observed fluxes, this work will extend the STANDFLUX model from non-reactive to reactive trace gases for 3D model estimates of (sub)canopy CO2, NO, NO2 and O3 concentrations. Modeled 1D and 3D turbulent exchange coefficients will be assimilated in a canopy gas exchange model. In this respect, the project goals are a) to couple the existing canopy gas exchange model STANDFLUX with the chemical box model MECCA developed by the Atmospheric Chemistry Department of the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry (MPIC),b) to exploit EGER I data to achieve better understanding of the properties of (sub)canopy turbulent flows c) to extend the IOP1 & 2 data bases to the clear cut site and forest edge to study phenomena that contribute to forest/clear cut-atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide, HONO, and the NO-NO2-O3 triad These focused goals fit clearly into the wider effort at the Weidenbrunnen/clear cut site to understand exchange processes in the region.
