The academic profession is generally perceived as an ambivalent profession shaped by contradictory challenges and expectations. Traditionally, Separation from the world in order to be creative was in tension with expectations of societal relevance. In the process of expansion of higher education, the tension grew between increased societal expectations and gradual Status loss. The aim of this CRP is to establish how the academic profession itself perceives, interprets and digests recent changes in its societal environment and the organisationalfabric of the higher education Systems. As regards the former, attention will be paid notabiy to the growing relevance of knowledge, diversification and internationalisation. As regards the latter, groups of individuai projects (IPs) of this CRP will explore the impact of changes in government, management and evaluation (United Kingdom, Austria and Romania}, changing academic career settings (Netherlands, Finland and Switzerland) and the professionalization both wiihin the academic roles as well as through modes of interaction and division of labour between new higher education Professionals and the academic profession (Germany, Croatia and Ireland). A comparattve data set on the academic profession in nine European countries based on questionnaire surveys will be established by conducting five representative surveys and by utilteing the data from four countries of the recent survey The Changing Academic Profession conducted in 18 countries worldwide. Thus, Information will be available on career patterns, work tasks and views on the conditions of academic work and the role of the academics. As the major joint activity, Interviews of academics will be undertaken in al! nine countries in order to understand the notions of challenges and the seif-understanding of the academics. In addition, various IPs wii! undertake surveys of the views of administrators, higher education Professionals or other relevant actors within the higher education System.
