J. Simon and S. Franz have identified important mechanisms of immune modulation by GAG derivatives. Their aim in the third funding period is to investigate multifunctional hydrogels adapted to the different phases of wound healing (e.g. combination of anti-inflammatory and regeneration-promoting functions). It also planned to evaluate how sHA-based hydrogels terminate inflammation in chronic wounds. In a translational approach, the immunomodulatory effects of aECM will be validated using wound fluids and macrophages from patients suffering from impaired wound healing.
