Final Report Abstract
We analyzeed height trends in eleven European countries, derived from recruits born between the middle of the 17th century and the middle of the 18*th century who enlisted in foreign regiments of the French army. We found diverging trends in the height of European populations: Irish and English heights increased in the second half of the 17th century and levelled of thereafter, while heights for all continental countries stagnated in the second half of the 17th century and increased thereafter, except soldiers from Lorraine whose height decreased. Scottish soldiers also became smaller.
