Project Details
Development of an ultra-high resolution neutron computed tomography system for the characterisation of drill cores.
Applicant
Dr. Kai-Uwe Hess
Subject Area
Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry
Term
from 2009 to 2011
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 116981142
Samples from the drilling and the dome of Unzen will be deformed with a unique high temperature high pressure press to monitor, in situ, the rheology and seismogenic character of the sample. The development of an ultra-high resolution neutron computed tomography system will provide insight into the process of magma fragmentation. It is hoped that a better understanding of magma failure will lead towards a first ever deterministic prediction model for Unzen type dome building volcanos with a view to disaster mitigation.
