Principles of Crucifer Evolution
Final Report Abstract
Principles of crucifer evolution were addressed in this project. Radiation within this family was highly driven by whole genome duplications, a principle which is generally applicable to many plant families. Polyploidization rate across the family inferred from both chs sequence and chromosome number data was high and both ancient and recent whole genome duplication events were found to be frequent in all major lineages. Based on chs sequence data, certain tribes could be identified to have undergone ancient whole genome duplication, such as Megacarpaeeae. Recent polyploidization occurred in nearly all monophyletic tribes. Significantly enlarged genome sizes of members of lineage III indicate a whole genome duplication event in the early radiation phase of this lineage. Genomes are frequently reorganized and downsized after polyploidization. Radiation within certain tribes such as the Arabideae was additionally driven by shifts in life history traits. The annual life cycle was highly correlated with lowland habitats and the perennial life cycle with high montane/alpine habitats. Switching to a perennial life cycle resulted in increased diversification rates of the corresponding clades. It was evident that the Irano-Turanian region can be assumed as cradle of Brassicaceae diversification.
