Final Report Abstract

The research of our contributing project focused on the design and implementation of satellite-supported techniques to distribute plot-based meteorological measurements in space to generate area-wide meteorological and vegetation-related datasets. Within the two years of our project we fulfilled almost all objectives set in the proposed working packages. With respect to the meteorological products, the interpolation-based techniques are at hand but the final datasets can not be supplied to the central data base system before the currently running quality control of the station datasets is finished by the core instrumentation project. The latter has become necessary due to detected malfunctions within several data loggers distributed over all three Exploratories. The concept of the satellite-based rainfall retrieval has also been proven and again, only a final evaluation using station data from the exploratories is on due. Afterwards, a reliable and operational rainfall rate technique will be at hand. The land-cover related products have faced the challenge to account for very smallscale inhomogeneities but with the additional incorporation of RapidEye-datasets, a profound database has already been established which will be published as part of an overall synthesis paper together with the core synthesis project later this year. The implemented techniques will provide a range of valuable datasets to the other core and contributing projects of the currently running funding phase.
