Within the scope of this project a synthesis of the oxazolomycins will be developed. These natural products exhibit interesting biological and pharmacological properties, namely antibiotic, antiviral and antitumor activity. Up to date only two syntheses are published of a single member of this family of natural products. For the synthesis two general strategies will be applied. Firstly, the feasibility of the manganese(III) mediated oxidative radical cyclisations of malonates will be investigated. Secondly, a method for transition metal-catalysed intramolecular cyclisation reaction of malonates or derivatives with alkenes or alkynes will be studied. The aim of this part of the project is to establish the feasibility of the required transformations on model systems followed by its application to the synthesis of members of the oxazolomycin family.
